James Kelley interview (eng/hrv)

On 19.11.2016, Zadar has the opportunity to listen a DJ techno veteran - James Kelley.

Influenced by dank dark warehouses and all night marathon sets, his sets have been known to focus primarily on minimal and techno. He also curates and hosts his own events under the name SOURCE 20/20 in Dallas where he currently resides.

-Who is James Kelley?

I currently reside in Dallas, Texas which is the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the US with just over 7 million people in the city and surrounding areas combined. I moved to Dallas in 1998 after growing up in a small rural town in west Texas. I've been DJing and hosting events for nearly two decades in the area.

-When did the bug bite you?

When I moved to Dallas I began attending warehouse parties and club events frequently. Sometimes 4-5 nights a weeks. I knew that I wanted to DJ almost immediately after attending my first event. I really enjoyed the energy of the music from the dance floor, but I was always more curious as to how it was actually being mixed. I would always find myself in or near the booth watching the DJ play. I purchased my own gear in early 1999, and spent all of my free time teaching myself how to mix. It wasn't until 2010 that I produced my first tracks.

-Do you consider DJing and producing going hand in hand or is it something that modern/digital age has forced?

Personally I think they go hand in hand. For me to go deeper into my own mind and express myself as an artist, I feel that producing music is essential. Many times, even if I'm really enjoying other artists tracks, they don't necessarily say exactly what I'm thinking at the time. I find that producing helps me get more personal and brings me closer to the music, which ultimately brings me closer to the listener. On the other hand, I do believe that the digital age has definitely forced artists to produce music in order to be unique, and/or stay relevant. With technology these days, there are so many more DJs in the scene, and without producing your own music, it's hard to separate yourself from the others and develop your own sound.

-Where do you get your inspiration?

I find inspiration in almost everything.

-How different is your studio session versus DJ gig?

My studio sessions are extremely personal. Very well thought out and calculated. I enjoy the solitude of a studio session. Carefully shaping sounds and textures, and taking my time to paint a picture in the DAW, exactly how I hear it in my head. I enjoy the raw energy and spontaneity of DJ gigs. No planning, only feeling and connecting with the crowd. Every gig is unique to me, and I enjoy interacting and just being in the moment with everyone that is in attendance.

-Some of your tracks are minimal and some of remixes are very hardcore. Where does that difference come from?

I haven't really written many minimal tracks in recent years. When I first began producing, that's what I was really into. A darker, low slung, druggy minimal sound. As I started getting booked for more peak hour time slots, I just evolved into producing a heavier, faster and a more aggressive sound to match. My solo sets these days are all techno. On the other hand, I do still play minimal under the moniker Dim Lights, a minimal/techno project I started with my sweet little woman, Jen aka Littlz.

-How would you describe your style?

Dark, heavy, relentless, brutal.

-How would you compare DJing  today and Djing 10-15 years ago?

Well, 10-15 years ago, everyone was playing vinyl. I think these days, artists can be a bit more creative. IF they use the tools available to their capacity. The number of tracks being released every week in our current digital state is insane. The selection process is a bit more tedious due to the amount of tracks available now. With electronic music hitting the mainstream so heavy in recent years, the crowds in attendance are a bit different as well. I'd say it's very different in many aspects, but yet still the same. Everyone is still there to have a good time and dance, which is most important.

-Please tell us your best and, if possible, your worst experience, as a DJ.

My best experiences in recent years have come from playing in New York City, which I've been fortunate to play many times. The crowds are high energy, in tune and attentive to the music, and very eager for new sounds. It makes it a lot of fun for an artist to play in those scenarios. As far as worst experiences, I've had my fair share of "interesting" nights where things didn't go as they should, with venues, sound issues etc..., but I like to leave those things in the past.

-Did you have any sinful pleasures in music?

Music IS a sinful pleasure. We get to do what we love, and play what we want, for people that are as into the sound as we are....

-How would you describe underground electronic music scene in US?

Hardworking. US promoters and DJs have all the odds stacked against them. It's not easy to push the sound in the States, but we work very hard to make things happen over here, and enjoy every minute of it. There are many talented artists all over the country that are extremely dedicated to their craft. Although the music is not as widely accepted in the States as it is in Europe, we still have a very solid scene that is steadily making huge steps forward.

-Is there any difference for you playing in Europe and playing in US?

Honestly, I take the same approach on a gig no matter where I'm playing. When the lights are off, the music is my focus. I'm just happy to have the opportunity to return to Europe and share an experience with people who are just as into the music as I am. Thanks Koncept crew!!!

-What can people in Zadar expect from you?

Techno. See you all soon!

Intervju s James Kelley *****(Hrvatski)

Uživam sirovoj energiji i spontanosti DJ nastupa.

Odakle ti takav kontrast?

Nisam stvarno napisao mnogo minimalnih traka u posljednjih nekoliko godina.

Marljivom.

Iskreno, ja imam isti pristup bez obzira gdje sam.

Hvala Koncept ekipa !!!
